Review of Casablanca – The Pride Hotel, Richmond Road, Bangalore

I liked Pride Hotel a lot the first time we went there for a wedding reception. The food was of course catered by the hotel and it was really nice. Good choices by the bride and groom, but all really well done. I had seen that they had a restaurant called Cafe Treat on the ground floor which went on our list. Cafe Treat was a buffet place largely. Then I read somewhere that they had an a la carte restaurant which did some a decent review or two. And that’s how we ended up there one Saturday afternoon.
The restaurant is on the first floor and occupies quite a large space. A section of it overlooks the lobby. The place was empty and that’s always makes one’s eyebrow go up a bit. But anyways, we settled down and were handed the menus. They are not really well thought of. They are designed to look like photo albums of yore. The narrow slits on either side for the leaflet. While these are good for sturdier photos, they are useless for thinner leaflets like this menu was. And the thing literally came off in our hands. We requested for one we could manage easier and were given the same menu in a while, with the leaflets fixed back in – only in a completely jumbled manner. Desserts in the beginning, starters at the end and the like.
Anyways, we put that behind us and ordered – a beer for Sudhakar and a Mojito for me. Nothing can go wrong with bottled beer. The Mojito looked fine for starters and then I realized there were undissolved sugar crystals and was a touch more potent than is good for a weekend afternoon lunch …. hmmm.
We didn’t really feel like starters and went straight to main courses. A Chicken Biryani for junior, a Chicken Mombasa sizzler for Sudhakar and a pasta for me. I asked for spaghetti in a tomato based sauce (can’t really remember the name) with chicken. Now the Chicken Biryani really was nice. The meat had been marinated, the masalas were well infused and the rice was perfectly done. Junior did justice to the bowl, which says a lot considering that feeding her is a task that even Hercules would run away from.
The sizzler too had the right amount of sizzle and was perfectly portioned for one person. There were potato wedges and boiled veggies on the side. I personally felt though that the onion rings on top were meant for some other dish in the kitchen by ended up on the sizzler. I love tomato based pastas, but this was a complete tomato harvest on one plate. The pasta was thin and almost vermicelli like and after a while, I just got bored with it and parceled for my work day lunch.
Overall, the experience was not exactly unpleasant. There are a few hits and misses and I guess you will enjoy your food depending on what you order. Customizing your dish is not really a thing here. The loo is a fair distance from the restaurant but clean. Casablanca is on DineClub’s roster for a 25% discount on the overall bill. This meal came to around Rs 1000 after the discount.

Review of Braai, Magrath Road, Bangalore

Braai is Afrikaans for grilled meat or for the process of grilling. Like many other words that English has adopted from various languages, this too has found a place in the dictionary. Braai is diagonally opposite Garuda Mall and on the first floor. A little easy to miss, so keep your eyes peeled. The door to Braai is a massive black and gold number and opens out to a pretty big restaurant with low seating with ethnic cushions and motifs.

The Glass Bangle ceiling

There was seating by the window side with view of Garuda and the oceans of traffic, but that was reserved for a larger group of people due to come in later. Once seated we began to look around. On first look, the place looks fine, but look a little closer and you see chipped paint, open electrical points and the area behind the cashier’s counter looks like a dumpyard of sorts. That having been said, Braai has attempted to work their decor, but failed to highlight it well. What I really loved was the fact that the ceiling was like a massive bangle holder. Glass bangles of many colors stretched across the expanse. I would love to know how many were used. There was also a stray set of Rajasthani dolls on one wall. At the end of the restaurant was a model of a truck which will definitely fascinate kids and a great view into the kitchen. You get to look in only if you are seated at that part of the restaurant.
Braai has a buffet and the a la carte going on side by side and we opted for the menu. We went in for two starters – Chicken and Cheese Sheek Kebabs and the Mutton Sheek. While we waited, we were given complimentary jal jeera. While the first sip was great, the next sip drives in how much chaat powder is there in it. It was enough to scratch your throat on the way down. Both the kebabs were decent without being brilliant. Not really sure if there was an cheese in the chicken one though.
For main courses, we decided on a chicken biryani for junior, which was really nice. It could have done without the handful of mint leaves on top, but the taste was pleasant and the portion good enough for two. We ordered for ourselves butter garlic naan and methi chicken. The naan was soft with toasted bits of garlic in there. Each naan was cut into three pieces and so there was quite a bit. The methi chicken went well enough with the naan. It had all the ingredients to make it good enough to have – lots of oil, onion-tomato-garlic base, in all probability thickened with a bit of almond paste and topped off with coriander. I wouldn’t put it all the way up there with the greats, but its way above the worse of the lot.
Kebabs
Biryani

The service at Braai is prompt enough. They make a strong attempt to keep you happy, but tend to forget small things like the chutney for kebabs, or water for the table or even spoons and forks to eat with, after setting the food on the table. The buffet is of two varieties and is on the lines of the offerings at a Barbeque Nation. You can opt for the limitless starters version or the 4-starter version. Its a place that is trying to get it right and is doing a decent enough job. It still has some of the road to cover though. This restaurant is on the roster of Dineclub and you get a 50% off on the a la carte.

Chili’s – an exception to popular opinion

Chili’s has been on the ever-growing list for a while now. But the excuses have been many – distance from home, some other places to visit or just plain lazy. And then finally we did manage to get ourselves there and were joined by Sudhakar’s cousin Reshma. Chili’s is on Old Airport Road and quite close to Total Mall. I read reviews of the place earlier and most of them were mixed. So, nothing like making some opinions of my own.
Now when we got in, the place was empty except for a couple. It was prime lunch time on a Sunday and I was a little skeptical. The place looked quite nice though with tile inlay tables, a very pub/diner feel. More of a set-up for larger groups and families than couples. But on that particular day, the place was quiet. We settled down and got ourselves some menus. Anoushka was offered some crayons and a leaflet of kiddie activities that also was a menu. Cute, but knowing my baby, once she was done with the coloring bit, the leaflet was tossed aside.
Reshma had a Sea Breeze which was grapefruit and a dash of cranberry. This mocktail was also available with a shot of vodka to make it more potent. I like apple based drinks and so went in for the Appletini – Vodka and Apple Sours. This, with a lot of crushed ice made it real nice (excuse the rhyme, that was unintentional). Now Sudhakar decided to spice things up a bit. Considering we were at Chili’s he asked for a Mojito with a bit of chili thrown in. What came was a nicely made Mojito served in a Collin’s glass as it should be. With it was a green chili or two slit down the center and mixed in. The effect… a chill from the ice, a kick from the chili and warmth of white rum going down.
We next moved to ordering the starters. We decided to order two starters and were given fair warning by the staff that the proportions were huge and we may not have space for main course. We puffed our chests up and said bring it on. And what you see below is what came in the form of Texas Cheese Fries and Chicken Wings. The Texas fries came on a main course sized sizzle plate, piled high enough for us and the neighboring table if there was anyone there. These fries were dunked in sinful cheese, a chili based sauce and topped off with sliced jalapenos. For Junior we chose from the kiddie menu and she has a cheese sandwich with fries. There was also a nice dip that was very garlicy-mayo but nice. The chicken wings basket had around 8 wings and they were covered in a spicy sauce. The dip made it a nice mix of spicy and sweet-sour.
Shame on us, but by the time we were done with the starters and the drinks, we threw in the towel. We decided to order only one main course to go around for three. There were some many things of the menu we wanted to order and finally settled on the Cajun Chicken Pasta with alfredo sauce. We surprised even the wait staff with this singular order. But then hey, now I have a reason to go back. The pasta was great with the chicken being really soft. I wonder how they got it that way. The pasta was heavy thanks to the alfredo sauce and did us in for the day. We did not even have desserts.
The place began to fill up gradually. What you will notice that for an American place, it serves no beef or pork and that could be the only thing I found lacking. The bill was around Rs 2000, give and take a little. There is a service charge levied that adds to the bill noticeably. The meal though expensive was made a easier on the wallet thanks to the Dineclub card (click widget on top left for details) that I got for myself a while back. The discount for card members is 20% and this works well when you are in a group. Only remember to make a phone reservation before you get to the resto. They even have an enclosed smoking room with a LCD TV. Nice touch!. The restaurant is expensive, but I personally felt I got my money’s worth.
